Broadway Loft punch-listed and ready for move-in. The CNC routed line work shown on the sliding wall above is part of a larger drawing that runs continuously (episodically) across all east/west oriented surfaces. This drawing was developed based upon research into Eastern European cellular vaulting performed in preparation for a graduate studio at UCLA led during Fall Quarter, 2013. The three-dimensional perceptual effects generated by variations in line proximity pay subtle homage to the work of op-artists such as Briget Riley. Here, with the strong two-dimensional figure/ground discordance of Riley’s work replaced by a relatively subtle counter-relief play between light and shadow, the faceted topographical surface implied by the drawing oscillates from shallow to deep depending on ambient light and the perspective of the viewer.
